Our Director and Senior Researcher at the Minority Issues Research Institute, Dr Svetluša Surová, has participated in the Annual Conference of the School of Advanced Social Studies, with the theme “Societies in flux: navigating uncertainty, change and resilience,” taking place on 15-16 May 2026 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

About the Conference
Global Social Nexus is an international, multidisciplinary conference that unites academics, researchers, and practitioners across many social science fields to discuss, integrate, and critically examine current social issues in diverse intercultural contexts.
The conference offered a forum for interdisciplinary and intercultural exchange across disciplines like sociology, political science, psychosocial counselling, media and communication studies, social policy, and related fields, building on a long-standing tradition of social science scholarship.
At this conference, theoretical, empirical, and practice-focused findings were presented that bridge research, policy, and lived experience by addressing social phenomena across national, cultural, and societal boundaries.
MIRI Delegate at the Conference
Dr Svetluša Surová was presenting her research notes on the impact of COVID-19 measures on vulnerable minorities in Slovakia, sharing insights from qualitative research on pandemic measures concerning Marginalized Roma Communities (MRCs), the main challenges that arose, and the strategies that she adopted.
Dr Svetluša Surová also chaired the panel on Identities, culture and belonging, where she presented. The participants of the panel were Orazio Maria Gnerre from the Institute for the History of the Italian Risorgimento, Italy, with a presentation on the Relevance of Italian Political Thinkers in the Global Age of Uncertainty; Bojan Miklosh, Lazar Gjurov and Aleksandra Janeska Iliev from the Military Academy General Mihailo Apostolski, Skopje and Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, North Macedonia presenting research on the Mitigating Cultural Transmission Unpredictability through Tenure-Sensitive Leadership: Evidence from the Public Sector; Izabela Anna Predko, University of Szczecin, Poland presented her input on the Identity as a Field of International Competition: Narrative Power and Cognitive Resilience in an Era of Epistemic Uncertainty and finally Dr Svetluša Surová, Minority Issues Research Institute, Slovakia give presentation on the Researching the impact of COVID-19 measures on vulnerable minorities during the pandemic: methodological and ethical challenges of empirical research.
