The book launch of 'The D-Word: Perspectives on Democracy in Tumultuous Times' edited by Christi van der Westhuizen, Siphiwe Dube, and Zwelethu Jolobe took place on October 10, 2024, at the Research Centre Global Dynamics (ReCentGlobe) at Leipzig University.
Druckfrisch is a collaborative initiative between the European Network in Universal and Global History (ENIUGH) and the Leipzig Research Centre Global Dynamics (ReCentGlobe).
About the Event
The book was discussed with the editor Christi van der Westhuizen (Nelson Mandela University, South Africa) and two authors Rachid Boutayeb (Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, Qatar) and Svetluša Surová (Minority Issues Research Institute, Slovakia). The event was moderated by Constanze Blum (Leipzig University, Germany), and commented on by Ulf Engel (Leipzig University, Germany).
Our President and Senior Researcher Dr Svetluša Surová presented her contributing chapter “Targeting Marginalised Roma Communities in Slovakia: An Analysis of Official Measures During the COVID-19 Pandemic” to this book.

About the Book
This edited collection was published by Mandela University Press in Gqeberha at the end of 2023 and brings together critical perspectives from the Global South on the evolving challenges faced by democracy. Covering fields from philosophy to socio-legal studies and activism, the book bridges national and conceptual divides, offering new insights into democracy’s future.
