Minority Issues Research Institute (MIRI) participated in the United Nations Sixteenth session of the Forum on Minority Issues taking place from 30 November to 01 December 2023 in Geneva.
This year's topic of the forum was “Minorities and Cohesive Societies: Equality, Social Inclusion, and Socio-economic Participation”.
Our President and Senior Researcher Dr Svetluša Surová, delivered an intervention which Called for the remedy and apology for the violation of the fundamental rights and freedoms of persons belonging to Marginalized Roma Communities (MRCs) during the pandemic in Slovakia in Session 3 - Legal and Structural Approaches to More Inclusive Societies.
In the statement, Dr Svetluša Surová welcomed the Forum's attention to the issues of equality and inclusion of minorities into societies, and she urged the UN to address the implications of the pandemic for Roma minorities, especially their equal access to rights.
Further, she has recommended that the affected persons by illegal and discriminative measures in MRCs should have the right to legal remedy, and appropriate compensation for wrongful acts inflicted on them. And finally, she called the government of Slovakia to officially apologize to them.
